Pitt St. Skatepark - An Undercover Skatepark Project

The Undercover Skatepark project has grown out of the enthusiasm of Jacob and Jenna Skinner who have a keen interest in bringing the people together to enjoy the various forms of wheeled sport in an indoor setting. The community-based project was conceived in 2018 and has gathered momentum both within the skateboarding community and in a range of support organisations including Portsmouth City Council, which has been highly supportive and has helped to bring the project to fruition.

Over the years the team have been working hard to build a state-of-the-art indoor wheeled sports leisure facility that can be used all year round, rain or shine. The lease of a vacated Sainsbury’s supermarket in the centre of Portsmouth has been taken and the transformation of the new indoor wheeled sports facility took around a year to complete. The building is based in the Charles Dickens ward, which is in the 10% of the most disadvantaged wards in the UK.

The Founders

Jacob has been skating most of his life and has connections with many people in the industry and experience of how skateparks operate. He is a qualified skateboard coach and has coached for over 3 years. He worked in hospitality for 14 years and in management for 5 of those years. Jake has a passion for community and supporting those around him.

Jenna ran her own registered charity for 6 years and a national volunteer programme within Portsmouth for 3 years prior. She won a business award for her work and was short listed as Community Woman of the Year. Jenna has built a solid relationship with various groups and individuals around the city and also has experience in hospitality, sales, retail and management. Both Jake and Jenna have worked at skateparks previously.

USP has been set up as a Community Interest Company (CIC). The new facility has been named Pitt St. Skatepark and opened its doors to the public on Saturday 10th December 2022. A generous skatepark and multi-purpose rink will be open 6 days a week along with the Pitt St. Kitchen, a café and bar.

More facilities will open in 2023 including the Pitt St. Academy; a coaching programme available to all ages starting with skateboarding and inline skating but to include scooters and BMX in the future. Birthday parties and celebrations will be at the heart of the events schedule.
